Red mangoes love warmth and humidity. That's why they can grow extra long all year round in tropical climates, at ideal temperatures of 25-28 °C. To ensure that the mango trees thrive, they are watered with rainwater from collection basins, which is fed directly to the roots of the trees via drip irrigation. After about 20 weeks, the mangoes are ready to be harvested. "Before we harvest them, we check their sugar content. Our precious gems only get their sweet tropical flavour when it's high enough," explains proud picker Flávio Moraes.

SanLucar mangoes are grown in Spain, Brazil, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Senegal, where the climate is optimal and the soils are fertile.

What makes SanLucar fruits special?

• Using various measurements, such as sugar, juice and acid content, they can determine whether the fruit meets their requirements or whether harvesting can wait.

• If their plants get sick, they always use beneficial insects to combat this. They only use pesticides if there is no alternative.
• After harvesting, the fruits are cooled to the right temperature until they are delivered to the partner.
• They do not harvest all at once, but in several phases. The right time to harvest is very important.
