Producer information
The Kovács és Lánya winery is located in Gyöngyöstarján, in the heart of the Mátra wine region. The landscape surrounding the village is a true wonder, which is why they feel it is their mission to create fine wines that best express the characteristics of Mátra. They farm on a more than 100-hectare vineyard at the foot of the gentle hills, with a professional past that respects ancient winemaking traditions and a youthful, fresh momentum.
László Kovács founded the current Kovács Winery in 1999 and enriched the vineyard inherited from his grandparents with his own plots. Since then, the purchase, planting of new, increasingly high-quality vineyards and the development of viticulture and winemaking have been continuous. After all, they never lose sight of the goal that inspired our ancestors: their mission is still to produce wines that best express the magical diversity of Mátra. In 2011, the winemaker's daughter, Zita Kovács, also returned to the tradition of her ancestors, so today she is also a pillar and enthusiastic member of the family business alongside her father.
About the Mátra wine region
Significant wine production has been taking place on the protected vineyards on the southern slopes of the Mátra Mountains since the Middle Ages. Several secular and sacred manor vineyards and medieval cellars have recorded the existence of local wine production. The most famous is the so-called Haller-uradalmi tithe cellar built in Gyöngyöstarján in the middle of the 18th century, whose bottomless stomach swallowed the must of the surrounding area, from which excellent white wine was made.
Its characteristic grape varieties are Irsai Olivér, Chardonnay, Leányka, Szürkebarát, Kékfrankos, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon.
