The olive was first cultivated in Greece, probably on the island of Crete, around 3500 BC. It reached North Africa and Asia Minor through Phoenician traders. It was also found in royal tombs in Egypt. Missionaries took it to the New World.
It first became known in California, where there are olive trees that are about 200 years old, while in Europe it is not uncommon for them to be 300-500 years old. Moreover! In Israel, on the Mount of Olives, it is believed that the olive trees there were already there in Jesus' time, so they are more than 2000 years old. In light of all this, we can see that olive trees are very long-lived.
