Like every serious success story, this one also began with a special and unique personality from the company's early days. Josef Manner, a trained merchant, opened his first shop in 1890, a stone's throw from St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, primarily selling chocolate bars and fig coffee. From the very beginning, Josef Manner pursued the strategy of selling higher quality chocolate products than the competition, but at a lower price: "Every child who gives even a penny for my products should not only receive a sweet, but also valuable nourishment," he used to say with fondness.
