Mozartkugel is a spherical confectionery, a uniquely delicious combination of nougat cream, marzipan and chocolate. The original Salzburg Mozartkugel was made with a pistachio-flavoured marzipan centre, surrounded by a thick layer of nougat cream and covered with dark chocolate.
The triumph of Mozartkugel
Mozartkugel dates back to 1890, from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's hometown, Salzburg. The delightful praline's multi-layered taste experience is reminiscent of Mozart's music, which led to its current name. Its inventor - a Salzburg master confectioner - initially called it Mozart-Bonbon.
In 1900, the charming, round "Bonbon" finally found its way to its name. This is when Mozartkugel was born, and it continued its success story outside Salzburg, just like Mozart himself.
In the 1920s, Mozartkugel was already an indispensable part of the Salzburg Festival. The second half of the 20th century saw a huge boom in Mozartkugel - people's desire for the sweet delicacy grew. The traditional handcrafting of the time could not cope with the high demand. This is when Victor Schmidt invented a modern production method that made it possible to produce large quantities while preserving the historical recipe and the well-known quality.
Today, Mozartkugel is known far and wide. As a typical sweet from Mozart's hometown, it is known all over the world. Just like in the 19th century, the unique taste of Mozartkugel still creates a sweet symphony for the senses.
