Thai basil is a type of basil, its plant is quite different from traditional basil. It is characterized by red, square-shaped stems covered with fine hairs. Unlike traditional basil, the stem is solid. The leaves of this anise basil are narrowly lance-shaped, entire, dark green, with prominent veins. It blooms pink. Its most common variety is 'Siam Queen', which can be grown in our country with a little care.
The aroma and taste of Thai basil are also completely different and exotic to us due to its distinct essential oil composition. Its scent is reminiscent of anise, and its taste is slightly pungent and peppery.
Usage
Thai basil occupies an irreplaceable place in almost all Asian cuisines. It is mainly found in Thai, Vietnamese, Laotian, and Cambodian specialties.
This variety of basil was bred so that its aroma would withstand higher temperatures during cooking. Although it is added to dishes during cooking, it is inconceivable that this aroma would last forever. This also stems from the nature of Asian cuisines, which minimize preparation time. Therefore, we do not recommend using Thai basil for broths, long stews, and similar heat-intensive preparations. It is particularly suitable for meat and vegetable stir-fries prepared in a wok, marinades, Asian soups, and fish dishes. It is usually combined with garlic, fresh chili peppers, fish sauce, and curry.
This variety, like traditional basil, cannot be stored for long in the refrigerator. The properties of anise basil are preserved even when dried, which is why it is dried and exported to Thailand. When cooking with dried basil, it is advisable to soak it first and only then add it to the dish.
