The pear is native from Western Europe through North Africa to Asia. Today we know more than 5000 pear varieties, 25 of which are cultivated, and about 10 varieties are marketed, including summer, autumn and winter varieties. It contains calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron and iodine, and is also a rich source of vitamins: A, B1, B2, C, E.
Interesting fact
The first cultivated varieties were experimented by the Greeks about three thousand years ago. Theophrastus already distinguished the cultivated pear from the wild pear in the 3rd century BC, and also detailed the method of grafting. In the time of the Romans, forty different varieties were already cultivated: with its colours ranging from green to yellow, brown and red, the pear is still one of our most colourful fruits, its shape ranging from the typical pear shape, elongated and widening at the bottom, to the round shape similar to an apple.
Use
It is primarily consumed raw, but pear soup can also be made from it, it can be used as a filling, as a side dish, in sauces, in cakes. Due to its medium pectin content, thicker jam and preserves can only be cooked with a longer cooking time, by adding other high-pectin fruits or gelling agents.
