Kasteel Rouge

This beer is the fruit-spiced red version of the Ingelmunster "castle beers". In addition to barley malt, wheat was also used in its production. The fresh brew of Kasteel Donker is aged in barrels for 6 months together with a mixture of sour cherries and sour cherry juice, resulting in this noble-tasting, strong yet refreshing beer. Deep ruby in colour, its pink head is relatively short-lived. Its aroma is dominated by sour cherry and almond. Lean but firm-bodied, its alcohol and sugar content are elegantly concealed, yet it is still powerful. A definite hop aroma can be felt at the end of the sip.

Producer information

The history of the brewing dynasty begins in 1811 in Werken. Amandus Vanhonsebrouck, the mayor of the town, runs a dairy, a brewery and a distillery on his farm. Amandus' son, Emil, and his wife move to Ingelmunster, where they continue brewing on their farm in their factory called Sint Jozef. In the 1930s, they manage to expand their factory, and after the Second World War, they are already exporting their pils-type products. The company was given the name Vanhonsebrouck in 1956, after they started to deal with aged brown beer instead of pils-type beers, which was given the name Bacchus. In the 1970s, they started to brew lambic-type beers, and from the 1980s onwards, they started to brew specialty beers. After that, they also started to deal with fruit beers, and in 2015, the chocolate beer was also born. In 2016, they opened their modern factory building with state-of-the-art equipment, which is the most modern brewery in the whole of Europe.
