Producer information
The Tobler family's success story began in 1867 in a chocolate shop in Bern. The delicacies sold so well that the family head and his sons opened their own chocolate factory in 1899. Then in 1908, Toblerone was born, a name that is a play on the words Tobler and torrone (the Italian term for honey-almond nougat). The pyramid-shaped chocolate treat was such a success that the Toblers had the brand patented in 1909.
The packaging of the world-famous delicacy has featured the Matterhorn, the seventh highest peak in the Alps, for decades, but if you look closely enough at the packaging, you'll notice that a bear shape is also hidden in the drawing of the mountain peak. The chocolate's success is demonstrated by the fact that in 2007 alone, as many bars of Toblerone chocolate were produced as there are people on earth.
