When Leerdammer cheese was first produced, it could not be classified as any of the existing cheese types – such as Gouda, Emmental or butter cheese. The cheese's unique flavour and large holes were so special that a new name was created for it: Leerdammer. Thanks to its characteristic flavour and outstanding quality, Leerdammer remains an unsurpassed original cheese to this day. It is a perfect, fresh semi-hard cheese with large holes, which contains neither preservatives nor lactose. All three types of Leerdammer (Original, Lightlife and Delacréme) are rich in calcium.
