The Equator passes directly through this East African gem, thanks to which its climate is extremely balanced, with hardly any difference between the various seasons in Kenya. Unlike neighboring Ethiopia, coffee cultivation is relatively new in the country; coffee only appeared in Kenya in 1893, thanks to missionaries, and then coffee cultivation grew during British rule under very strict conditions, humiliating for the local residents. For a long time, those working on the land didn't even know what treasure they were working with, as the country's best coffees were exported, and only the lowest quality coffee was sold locally. Today, coffee cultivation ranks third in Kenya's GDP, and the total area of land used for coffee growing is estimated at 160,000 hectares. The majority of the land is used by small-scale farmers who work in cooperatives, and the coffee produced is sold at auctions. The price is determined by the quality of the coffee and its grading, which mostly depends on the size of the coffee bean. Green coffee is usually graded in Kenya. Coffee beans screened above 15/16 are called "AB". Kenya has long been a leader in cultivating high-quality East African Arabica – its best lots are renowned for their fruity, clean, complex profiles, offering balance and distinct flavor notes from berries and stone fruits to sweet citrus. Kenya AB coffee is rightly called one of the best coffees in the world.
