The Budapest Dairy Company started manufacturing the originally Soviet sweet in 1968 (its ancestor, a vanilla-flavored, chocolate-coated treat filled with a curd-butter-sugar mixture, already existed in the Soviet Union under the name 'glazirovannij szirok'). The idea came to Hungary during a study tour among Comecon countries. It was first produced at Szabolcstej's dairy plant in Mátészalka, and later production also began at Zalkatej's dairy plant in Nagybánhegyes. Following the regime change, the manufacturing companies were privatized, through which the production of Túró Rudi came under the ownership of Friesland-Campina.
