Passion fruit "Maracuja"

Passion fruit or maracuja is a tropical fruit native to South America, belonging to the passionflower family. The skin of the passion fruit is usually brownish-purple, but there is also a yellow-skinned variety, which is less common. It is worth hunting for specimens with a more wrinkled skin, as these are certainly ripe, if unripe, the skin is smooth and shiny.

Use

The fruit is very easy to open: just cut it in half and spoon the inside out of the skin. Inside, you can find yellowish-orange jelly-like, slightly gelatinous fruit pulp and small black seeds: both the fruit pulp and the seeds are edible. If the seeds bother someone, the fruit pulp can be passed through a sieve, but when used in desserts, it can make the texture exciting if the small seeds are also used.

Storage

Store in a dry, cool place, between 10-12 °C.
